The inhabitants of Abu village some 20kilometers from Fundong in Boyo Division woke up earlier than usual in the morning of Thursday September 27, 2007 following a landslide that occurred by midnight. The landslide was triggered by heavy rains of the previous day, causing heavy mud to move down the slopes.
It is reported that many houses were destroyed, rendering close to one hundred and eighty seven persons homeless. A crisis meeting was held by the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO). for Boyo, Mr. Haman Mamoudou. A team comprising officials of the delegations of Environment & Nature Protection, Mines & Technological Development, and Energy & Water are already in Fundong to evaluate the damage done, and put in place safety measures.
It has been recommended that any building on the upper slope of Tukoni is hazardous. Two churches are reported to have been destroyed, with 27 homes completely covered by the earth.
