THE NORTHERN CAMEROONS QUESTION

In conventional warfare a tactical diversion is used to send enemy troops from the point where full scale attack is planned. Those advocating a British Cameroon s approach to the Southern Cameroons struggle have told us that all along in the struggle we have been speaking a language which is unknown at the UN because what the UN handed to Britain to administer was a single entity called the British Cameroons. In support of this point of view they have quoted Article 1 of the Trusteeship Agreement for the British Cameroons: "The Territory to which this Agreement applies comprises that part of the Cameroon lying to the West of the boundary defined by the Franco-British Declaration of 10th July 1919..."

When the Restoration Government was announced a few weeks ago, many citizens expressed surprise and skepticism about its authenticity. I was surprised too, but the names that appeared in its ranks were names from amongst our own ranks like Dr. Atang, Dr. Mondoa, and Professor Carlson Anyangwe. These are people deep in our struggle and strong in our belief that we must be free in a free and independent Southern Cameroons. I looked for a clue in Dr. Atang's reaction, as he is quick to respond to issues like these. When I did not see a reaction from him, it was good indication that a new government was a reality.
