“The Cameroon America AIDS Alliance (CAAA) is working with local partners in Cameroon, Africa, to help stem the spread of HIV/AIDS and alleviate the physical and psychological devastation of the disease. Using bold, innovative programs, CAAA is helping individuals and organizations better understand and respond to the AIDS epidemic through prevention education, testing, treatment, counseling, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Seeking to be a beacon of light and hope, CAAA is committed to operating a highly effective programmatic model that, in time, will be replicated in other African nations in the battle against HIV/AIDS. ”

During this Month of World AIDS Day, we are asking our readers to be part of a beacon of light and hope. Visit CAAA’s website for more information: AIDS in Africa. While there, you are encouraged to Donate to Charity or Volunteer .

Victim of ProtestsI went to Cameroon last December [2007] to do some groundbreaking work on a Health Center I am building to serve the needs of the rural communities near Eyumojock. The disaffection of the local communities was palpable. Most of government presence in those areas is meant for exploitation of the local populations.

That day we had been warned not to venture out because there was a mixed patrol of Gendarmes, Police, Customs and the Army, to enforce tax collection on commercial vehicles and motorcycles

This is the main road that links Cameroon to Nigeria, a huge economic potential for trade but it remains unmaintained, seasonal and impassable for up to 6 months a year. Against all advice, I decided to make this trip.
