Everyday racism in China

March 18th, 2009 TFT Staff Posted in Lifestyle No Comments »

From the early eighties, when African students could still study for free at the Beida University in Beijing, discrimination against Africans in China was reported in the international media. Since then, the story has been regularly repeated.

Just before the Beijing Olympics, racism was front page news again. In the bars of Sanlitun, the downtown area for foreigners, they were systematically denied entrance, just as in the discos of the capital.

“They come like a thief in the night, bang on the door of your hotel room and ask for your identity card. Whoever cannot identify himself, is taken away. They are unrelenting, Sir.

They questioned me for two hours in the police station, while my papers are fine. What did I do here? What sort of business was I into? How much money did I make? After two hours they let me go, without explanation nor apology. Human rights? They have never heard of such things here. And we Africans are the victims.

Dance Mania Hits Kenya

Our Man in Nairobi
Onyango Oketch

Don’t yawn yet, bear with me. Events proceed in Kenya as if incessantly choreographed by the same mischievous and manic hand schooled in dance mania. The political classes will have the same home comings, the activist classes their slick workshops and seminars and the youth is all, well – dances and dance styles. Our members of parliament live in the same quiet contemplative neighborhoods, shop in the same malls and send their kids to the same pricey schools. They do most things in unison – even conspire not to pay taxes together. Yet as is their past time, they have perfected the art of the squabble. With clockwork precision, thrust a rolling camera in their faces upon podiums and they go apish.

By Marcia Whitney-Schenck*

Promise Mkong, after a long day teaching at Mbingo Baptist School in northwest Cameroon, finds solace in Romans 8:28: “We we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.”

It is his prayer and his comfort for his challenges are many. He daily teaches thirteen subjects to students, who range in ages from 10 to 12, at a primary school started six years ago by missionaries Dr. and Mrs. David Preston and Thom and Ellen Schotanus for the dependents of employees at the nearby Mbingo Baptist Hospital, located in a verdant mountain pass in one of two English-speaking provinces in Cameroon, West Africa.

Can Cameroon’s Looming Catastrophe be Stopped?

Victim of ProtestsI went to Cameroon last December [2007] to do some groundbreaking work on a Health Center I am building to serve the needs of the rural communities near Eyumojock. The disaffection of the local communities was palpable. Most of government presence in those areas is meant for exploitation of the local populations.

I took a motorcycle ride from Eyumojock to Ayukaba to familiarize myself with the people and assess the needs on the ground. That day we had been warned not to venture out because there was a mixed patrol of Gendarmes, Police, Customs and the Army, to enforce tax collection on commercial vehicles and motorcycles

This is the main road that links Cameroon to Nigeria, a huge economic potential for trade but it remains unmaintained, seasonal and impassable for up to 6 months a year. Against all advice, I decided to make this trip. I had initiated a poverty alleviation program in that area, part of which involved purchasing motorcycles for unemployed youths to use for commercial transportation.
